Debate Union Spotlight: Kat Sittenauer
Today we spoke with Kat Sittenauer, a Drury University debater who is one of the most experienced debaters on the team. Kat has seen many debates this semester along with success. She has been to tournaments all over the Midwest and South: Monticello Arkansas, Fort Worth Texas, Tulsa Oklahoma, and most recently Shreveport Louisiana.
Who are you and why do you debate?
I am Kat Sittenauer, from Topeka, Kansas. I debated throughout high school in the 6A Flint Hills, Kansas League. I want to continue debating through college because I knew it would help me with my future in law. Also, I wanted to help shape the new Drury University Debate Union because I had heard that it was starting a new type of debate this year.
What would you say is the club’s biggest highlight this semester?
I don’t think a highlight can be just one moment, I think that every time the team advances one of our members is a highlight. In Monticello we broke two teams and an individual, and this was our first time out!
What is your biggest highlight this semester?
My biggest highlight so far this semester would be breaking into quarters at Monticello with Emily in team debate, again, this being our first time out.
How would you describe the Drury Debate Union? What is it like?
The Drury Debate Union is so much different from my high school team in that it’s a close knit group of people who want to see each other succeed for the sake of the team. I love this new type of debate, and I love the support we get from Dr. DeBerry and from our team members.
What would you say to alumni looking at this club?
I think this is a great program and I think we are on our way to proving ourselves to be one of the best teams out there, especially for our size and the face that we’ve just started this team this year. I’ve even had a competitor at a tournament come up to my partner Emily and I after a round and say that he was nervous to go against us because he had heard that Drury was a really good squad.
What would you say to potential students looking to join the debate union?
We’ll make you good, trust us.
