Debate Union Spotlight: Ameran Link
Today we spoke with Ameran Link! Ameran’s success has been on the upswing in the latter half of the season, including wins at John Brown University, University of Southern Mississippi, and the University of Oklahoma. We asked her to share some of her thoughts about debate as a competition and the Drury Debate Union as a team.
Who are you and where are you from?
My name is Ameran Link. I’m a junior English and Creative Writing Major and a French minor. I’m passionate about reading, writing, feminism, pirates, and tea.
How long have you been debating, and what drove you to join the Drury Debate Union?
I’ve been debating since my sophomore year of high school. I joined the Drury Debate Union after Dr. Deberry shared with me that he was revamping the debate program at Drury. I was at the first meeting and I’ve been with it ever since!
What would you say is the club’s biggest highlight this semester?
Though I’m proud of all the accomplishments of individual debaters and teams throughout this semester, the biggest highlight for me was the evening that we all spent sharing our favorite things about each other as a team building experience. We haven’t always been perfect, but I am so proud of every debater on our team and I can’t wait to see how we continue to grow together.
What is your biggest highlight this semester?
My greatest highlight was the point at which I realized that this team and the young people on it are far more important than a winning record. I can’t say I realized that immediately, but I definitely won’t forget that invaluable lesson again.
How would you describe the Drury Debate Union? What is it like?
Oh my, the Drury Debate Union has been through several stages already within it’s short revival! Right now, I would describe it as a team of highly dedicated and intellectual students who has come together to gain skill in debate. We’ve got all experience levels present, but not a single debater that isn’t uniquely talented.
What would you say to donors out there?
This team is worth any support you can provide to it! We have so many avenues we are starting to go down and it’s only just the beginning. Between filming and competitive tournaments all over the nation, the only limit to our accomplishments is our funding. There is so much growth to be seen within the Union and a wealth of potential in the students that are currently here and those to come.
What would you say to potential students looking to join the debate union?
Debate offers something for everyone. No matter what career you plan to follow in life, public speaking ability and argumentation skills are invaluable. So, come to a meeting! The team would love to meet you. While it isn’t necessarily easy to be a part of this organization, it’s completely worth it. We’re a family here and that is what is most important at the end of the day.
What is something that surprised you about the Drury Debate Union?
Honestly? I’m surprised we’ve gotten so far in such a short amount of time. It was only a year ago that we were just beginning and this team has already become respected within it’s circuit. It’s very impressive.
